Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 2 teaspoons white sugar
- 2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon olive oil, or as needed
- 1 (14 ounce) package refrigerated pizza dough
- 1 pound low-moisture mozzarella cheese
- 3 1/2 ounces thick pepperoni slices
Instructions
1
Heat a generous amount of olive oil in a large skillet over the medium-high heat setting, stirring occasionally. Add a blend of spices including dried basil, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, and red pepper flakes to the pan. Introduce a small amount of tomato paste into the mixture, stirring constantly until it begins to darken and develop a rich flavor on the bottom of the pan after 3-4 minutes.
2
Next, slowly pour in a sufficient amount of water and whisk the mixture to combine; bring it to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to a medium setting and continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until the sauce reaches your preferred consistency. Remove from heat and set aside for later use.
3
Preheat your oven to a high temperature of 500 degrees F (260 degrees C). Grease a baking sheet generously with olive oil, using your fingers to spread it evenly.
4
Now, take the pizza dough and begin to manipulate it by pressing, stretching, and pulling it until it fills the prepared baking sheet completely. If the dough becomes uncooperative, allow it to rest for 5 minutes before attempting to stretch it again.
5
Spread the cooled sauce evenly over the dough, making sure to cover all areas of the pan. Add a layer of mozzarella cheese and sprinkle pepperoni slices on top.
6
Carefully place the baking sheet over a high flame, slowly moving it around to distribute the heat evenly. Continue cooking until you hear the mixture starting to sizzle, approximately 1 minute.
7
Transfer the baking sheet into the preheated oven and bake until the cheese is beautifully browned and pepperoni is nicely charred, about 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and slice into individual portions before serving.
