Bread Machine Sweet Challah
Ingredients
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons bread machine yeast
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
Instructions
1
Begin by adding warm water, sugar, oil, eggs, honey, salt, flour, and yeast into a bread machine in the specified order. Choose the Dough cycle as per the manufacturer's instructions and initiate the Start button.
2
Once the cycle is completed, remove the dough from the machine and transfer it to a lightly dusted surface. Use your hands to gently press down on the dough, releasing any air bubbles, and allow it to rest for 5 minutes.
3
While the dough is resting, prepare a baking tray by lightly coating it with oil or cooking spray.
4
Divide the dough into two equal portions, and then divide each portion into three equal pieces. Roll out each piece into a long rope, approximately 12-14 inches in length. Braid three of these ropes together to form two loaves, taking care not to twist the dough too tightly.
5
Gently place the braided loaves onto the prepared baking tray, making sure they are evenly spaced. Mist the tops of the loaves with water and loosely cover them with plastic wrap to maintain humidity.
6
Place the loaves in a warm, draft-free area and allow them to rise until they have doubled in size, typically taking 1-1.5 hours.
7
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), ensuring it is at the correct temperature before proceeding.
8
Create an egg wash by whisking together an egg and water in a small bowl until well combined. Brush the tops and sides of the loaves with this egg wash, taking care not to overdo it.
9
Place the braided loaves in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 20-25 minutes. If the loaves begin to brown too quickly, cover them loosely with aluminum foil to prevent overcooking.
