Ingredients
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 tablespoons softened butter
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 (.25 ounce) envelope active dry yeast
- 3 teaspoons ground cardamom
- 2 egg whites, slightly beaten
- pearl sugar, or other decorative sugar

Insert the ingredients into the bread machine's pan in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines. Activate the dough cycle and initiate the Start function.

Once the dough cycle has concluded, separate the resulting loaf into three equal parts. Shape each portion into a long, thin rope measuring 12 to 14 inches in length. Arrange the three ropes side by side and intertwine them to form a braid. Secure the ends beneath the loaf, place it on a greased baking sheet, and cover it loosely with a towel. Allow the dough to rise until it has doubled in size.

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (or 190 degrees Celsius, as specified).

Dip the braid in beaten egg white and sprinkle it with pearl sugar before placing it in the preheated oven to bake until golden brown, taking approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
