Begin by placing a smoked ham or pork shoulder into a large, deep container. Fill the pot with sufficient water to completely submerge the meat, then sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper over it. Close the lid and bring the mixture to a rolling boil. Once boiling, gradually decrease the heat to a low simmer and allow it to cook for approximately 30 minutes.

Next, add sliced potatoes, shredded cabbage, chopped onions, and peeled carrots to the pot. Continue to cook until all vegetables are tender, which typically takes around 25 minutes.
