Bobotie from South Africa
Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon oil, or as needed
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 slice bread
  • 1/2 cup milk, divided
  • 1 egg, beaten, divided
  • 1/4 cup seedless raisins
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons chutney
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to the desired temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
2
Heat a sufficient amount of oil in a large skillet over the medium-high heat setting; add sliced onions and cook until they turn a deep brown color, approximately 5 minutes.
3
Add ground beef to the skillet with onions and continue cooking until the meat is fully browned, around 5 minutes.
4
In a separate small bowl, combine milk and mashed bread to create a liquid mixture. Add this mixture to the ground beef, stirring until well combined.
5
Mix in half of a beaten egg, along with raisins, vinegar, sugar, turmeric, salt, curry powder, and ground black pepper into the beef mixture.
6
Transfer the beef mixture to a suitable-sized glass baking dish and insert bay leaves for added flavor.
7
Bake the dish in your preheated oven for 30 minutes.
8
In a separate small bowl, whisk together the remaining half of an egg and the remaining 1/4 cup of milk until well combined.
9
Pour this mixture over the meat, and return it to the oven for an additional 30 minutes.
10
Serve the dish hot, accompanied by a side of chutney.
