Ingredients
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons cream-style horseradish sauce
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1/3 teaspoon paprika
- 1/3 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 pinch ground black pepper
- 1 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1/3 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/8 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/8 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 large sweet onion
- 3/4 cup vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
1
Gather all necessary ingredients and supplies beforehand.
2
Combine mayonnaise, horseradish, ketchup, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, oregano, and black pepper in a medium-sized bowl. Mix until the ingredients are fully incorporated and well combined. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate until required.
3
In another medium-sized bowl, whisk together milk and egg until the two liquids are fully incorporated. Set this mixture aside for later use.
4
In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, salt, cayenne pepper, paprika, black pepper, oregano, thyme, and cumin. Set both bowls aside for now.
5
Cut off the top and bottom of an onion, about 1 inch in size. Remove any papery skin that may be covering the onion.
6
Using a large, sharp knife, slice down the center of the onion about 3/4 of the way through. Turn the onion 90 degrees and slice again.
7
Continue to slice each section in half until you have a total of 16 individual onion pieces. Be careful not to cut through the bottom of the onion.
8
Spread out the onion pieces and separate them. To keep them from sticking together, you can briefly plunge the onion into boiling water for 1 minute and then transfer it to cold water to stop the cooking process.
9
Dip each onion piece into the milk mixture, coating it thoroughly. Then, roll the onion in the seasoned flour mixture to coat, making sure to separate each petal and sprinkle the flour between them.
10
Dip the onion piece back into the milk mixture, coating it again to ensure all pieces are well-coated with flour.
11
Heat a large amount of oil in a deep fryer or deep pot to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Make sure the oil is at least deep enough to completely cover the onion when it fries. Carefully lower the onion, cut-side up, into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 10 minutes.
12
Drain the onion pieces on a rack or paper towels to remove excess oil.
