Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup butter at room temperature
- 3 tablespoons ice water
- 4 cups blackberries
- 1 1/4 cups white sugar
- 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup cold butter, diced
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to a high temperature of 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius).
2
Combine the flour and salt in a large mixing bowl, then whisk them together until well blended. Add the softened butter to the mixture and continue to blend until it has a coarse, grainy texture similar to cornmeal. Gradually add the ice water to the mixture, stirring until it forms a cohesive dough that can be refrigerated for later use.
3
Prepare the berry mixture by placing the berries in a separate mixing bowl. Sprinkle 1 and 1/4 cups of sugar over the top of the berries, followed by a dusting of 6 tablespoons of flour. Add a small amount of water to the mixture, stirring until it is moistened and evenly coated.
4
Transfer the berry mixture to a 2-quart baking dish, scraping it into the bottom of the container. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of 1/4 inch, then cut it into long, thin strips approximately 3/4 inch wide. Arrange the dough strips in a crisscross pattern over the berry mixture.
5
Sprinkle diced butter evenly over the top of the dough strips. Place the dish in a preheated oven and bake until the berries are tender and the crust is golden brown, taking around 30 minutes to achieve this result.
