  • 2 pounds collard greens - rinsed, trimmed and chopped
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 tablespoon liquid smoke flavoring
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste

Preheat the cooking vessel by heating oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Sear the onion and garlic until they reach an optimal level of translucency, at which point they will have lost their raw edge. Introduce the chopped collard greens into the pot, followed by an adequate amount of water to ensure they are fully submerged. Combine the brown sugar, molasses, and liquid smoke in a harmonious blend, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Initiate boiling, subsequently adjust the heat to a lower setting and allow the mixture to simmer for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the greens have reached a state of tender maturity.
