Ingredients
- 1 (16 ounce) package ziti pasta
- 1 pound shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
- 1 (15 ounce) container whole-milk ricotta cheese
- 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided
- 1/2 cup grated Romano cheese
- 1/2 medium yellow onion, chopped
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon ground thyme
- salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 4 cups marinara sauce, divided
Instructions
1
First, preheat the oven to a high heat setting of 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2
Next, fill a large container with water and add a moderate amount of salt to it. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil, then carefully place ziti pasta into the pot and cook with occasional stirring until it reaches a slightly firm but still yielding texture, approximately 8 minutes. Drain the water.
3
Then, combine a variety of cheeses including mozzarella, ricotta, 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, Romano cheese, chopped onion, fresh parsley, egg, garlic, dried basil, oregano, thyme, salt, and pepper in a large mixing bowl. Mix well with ziti pasta and 2 cups of marinara sauce.
4
After that, spread a layer of marinara sauce at the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish to coat its surface. Pour the ziti mixture into the dish, followed by an additional 1 cup of marinara sauce on top. Finish with a sprinkle of the remaining 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese.
5
Cover the dish with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven to cook until heated through, approximately 20 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 10 minutes or until the cheese is golden brown and bubbly. Remove from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
