Italian Sesame Cookies with Anise Flavor
Ingredients
  • 1 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons anise extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk, or as needed
  • 1 cup sesame seeds
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, which is equivalent to 175 degrees Celsius.
2
Combine the butter and sugar in a large mixing container using an electric mixer until they form a smooth, even mixture. Introduce the egg and anise extract into this mixture and continue to blend until everything is fully incorporated.
3
In a separate container, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt until they are well combined. Gradually add this mixture to your butter mixture, stirring until the ingredients have melded together seamlessly.
4
If you're using a stand mixer, continue to mix the dough for an additional minute to give it extra lightness. The resulting dough should be soft and pliable, but still hold its shape when rolled out.
5
Using your hands, pinch off small pieces of dough that are slightly smaller than a walnut. Roll these pieces into small logs and then dip them in milk before coating them evenly with sesame seeds.
6
Place the cookie logs one inch apart on a baking sheet to allow for proper spreading during baking. Due to their dense nature, these cookies will not spread excessively.
7
Bake the cookies in your preheated oven for 17 to 20 minutes, or until the bottom and sides are lightly toasted. Remove them from the oven and transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
8
Once cooled, store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for long-term preservation.
