Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup shortening
- 1 egg yolk
- 1/2 cup milk
- 10 apples - peeled, cored and thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup white sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 egg white
Instructions
1
Preheat your oven to a temperature of 375 degrees Fahrenheit (or 190 degrees Celsius).
2
Take a large mixing container and combine the flour and salt in it. Using your fingers or a pastry blender, break down the shortening into small pieces and mix it with the flour until you get a mixture that resembles coarse crumbs. In a separate container, whisk together the egg yolk and add enough milk to create a total liquid of 2/3 cup. Mix this liquid into the flour mixture until all the flour is well-coated.
3
Divide the dough in half and take one of the halves. On a surface dusted with flour, roll out this dough into a rectangle shape. Carefully place the dough rectangle into a 9x13 inch baking pan.
4
Take another large mixing container and combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Fill the 9x13 inch pan with this apple mixture.
5
Take the remaining dough and roll it out into a rectangle shape. Place this dough over the apple mixture in the pan, making sure to cover it evenly.
6
Use your fingers or a pastry brush to seal the edges of the dough and cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape. In a separate container, whisk together the egg white until it becomes frothy.
7
Brush this frothy egg white mixture over the top crust of the dough. This will give your pie a golden brown finish.
8
Bake this apple pie in the preheated oven for 50 minutes, or until it reaches a golden brown color.
